  1. Dear Aditi,
    I’m a non-Indian American woman who LOVES sarees-especially handlooms!!!!
‘m a fine artists who’s made my living in design-mostly giftware for high end companies. BUT, i would LOVE to explore designing sarees, and am wondering if you would be open to conversation about this, or have any useful thoughts or comments for me….Please do contact me in any event, i would absolutely love to chat….
    Very best,
    Maureen Drdak

    • Hi Maureen,
Sorry for the late reply! I was in a deadline situation and couldn’t write back earlier.

It’s great to know you like Indian handloom sarees and want to design them. If you need any kind of information please let me know. I’ll help as much as I can.

It’s a good thing that you take interest, especially because you are a designer yourself. We are trying to find an export market for dress material, mainly for skirts, using our ethnic handloom designs. May be you’ll be able to help us with design ideas that a Western woman like yourself would love to wear!

Some of our weavers already weave high quality scarves and stoles for the export market. This could be another area for them to diversify.

I’d also welcome you to subscribe to my blog!

      Best Regards,

      Aditi

      • Hello Aditi-so good to hear from you. I’d love to continue this conversation-can we do it through personal email?
Looking forward to hearing from you….
        Best, Maureen

    • Hi Marisa,

Welcome to the world of Bengal Handloom!

      Here are your options.

There are two categories of business entities that could interest you.

      1. The handloom weaver societies: –
These are the actual weavers and craftsmen who can weave wonderful stoles and scarves. However, these people are not so market savvy and are unwilling to take the hassles of banking, forex fluctuations, exports formalities etc. Few if any are connected to the internet!

If you are planning purchases for the long term, and have some time at your disposal, you could buy directly from the handloom weavers and let your buying agent look after the logistics.

You could find a buying agent in India who would take care of all the export procedures. (I could help finding one).

      2. The Export Houses : –
They do all the sourcing for you and take care of the logistics too.

Let me know your requirements and I will share my contacts with you.

I can help you a great deal if you choose to take the first option. My area of activity is Shantipur-Fulia – where the weavers are famous for weaving arguably the best handloom woven stoles and scarves anywhere in India. You can send all your queries to me – I will pass them on to the appropriate weavers and get quotes etc. I also help with designs after getting briefs from the client.

In fact, many of these weavers have often asked me to become a buying agent because they trust me – so may be I will get myself an export license one of these days!

      Best,
      Aditi

  5. Hello Aditi,
I am a writer living in the US. I just published my first book “Teatime for the Firefly” (Harlequin Mira October 2013). My second book (also fiction) has a section set in a Weavers Village and I am looking for details and photo references to enrich my story. I wonder if I could call you to chat a bit about it (are you on Skype?) or perhaps I can email you with my questions? Thanks! Shona
